Current blog 2009 archive 2008 archive Blog the leadership song Posted on: Monday, September 28, 2009 It never takes very long before a discussion about leadership turns to the topic of leadership versus management.  In many ways I find the topic one that is intriguing to researchers and academic but of little use to leaders called upon to lead each and everyday.  In the real world, as is often the case, boundaries between things are blurred and so it is between leadership and management. Here is my simple take on it.  Management is to leadership what an MP3 is to a song.  Whilst the concern of leadership is to make us reflect and challenge our own value and condition, the concern of management is to create the conditions to make us able to take actions based on these reflections. Leaders write the songs whilst managers ensure they are heard.  Without leaders there can be no meaningful management but without managers not many people will benefit from and hear great leadership.
